Major OE Supplier Closes - Backorder Alert

The bankruptcy of First Brands Group, one of the largest global automotive aftermarket suppliers, is creating significant disruption across the automotive parts supply chain. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2025.

As part of the restructuring and liquidation process, several divisions and manufacturing facilities have been shut down, including the Champion Laboratories filtration plant, a major producer of oil, fuel, and heavy-duty filters. The closure eliminates a key source of filtration products supplied to both OEM programs and the automotive aftermarket.

The impact will likely be felt throughout the automotive industry. OEMs such as Ford and General Motors are directly affected; the company’s collapse could disrupt vehicle production and service parts availability.

For new car dealerships, the most immediate effect will be potential shortages and longer lead times for service parts such as oil, air, and cabin filters that were previously sourced through First Brands’ filtration divisions and related suppliers. This could increase parts costs, reduce availability of OE-equivalent filters, and force dealerships and service departments to seek alternative suppliers.

At Total Automotive, we’re proactively expanding our filter inventory and securing additional supply options to keep your parts room stocked. In the event of backorders, priority allocation will go to active customers who have been consistently purchasing filters from us. Explore our Exact Match Filter program below to secure the coverage you need and avoid costly gaps in your parts inventory. For personalized recommendations or to place an order, reach out directly to your Total Automotive sales representative. 1-800-450-7750

Closed Monday Sept. 2nd for the Labor Day Holiday

The History of Labor Day: A Celebration of Workers’ Contributions

Labor Day, observed annually on the first Monday in September, stands as a tribute to the American labor movement and the contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century, a period marked by intense labor unrest and burgeoning industrialization.

Origins and Early Advocacy

The idea of Labor Day was first proposed in the early 1880s by labor leaders and activists who sought to recognize the vital role of workers in the nation's economy. Amid the industrial revolution, workers faced grueling conditions, long hours, and minimal pay, leading to widespread strikes and demands for better working conditions. In this context, the idea of a day dedicated to honoring workers gained traction.

The credit for the holiday’s inception is often given to either Peter J. McGuire, a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, or Matthew Maguire, a machinist and labor leader. Historical records suggest that McGuire proposed the holiday in 1882 during a meeting of the Central Labor Union in New York City, while Maguire is known to have suggested it around the same time while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union. Despite the debate over its true originator, both men were influential in the labor movement and contributed to the holiday's establishment.

The First Labor Day

On September 5, 1882, the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City with a parade organized by the Central Labor Union. The event featured a procession of thousands of workers, along with speeches and festivities, highlighting the strength and solidarity of the labor force. This demonstration of unity and strength captured the spirit of the labor movement and set a precedent for future celebrations.

National Recognition

Labor Day’s popularity grew, and by 1894, it gained national recognition. That year, a major event solidified its importance: a violent labor strike in Pullman, Illinois, led to a federal intervention that resulted in deaths and injuries. In response to the unrest and to mend relations with the labor movement, President Grover Cleveland and Congress quickly passed legislation making Labor Day a national holiday.

Evolution and Modern Observance

Initially, Labor Day was a day for parades and speeches, emphasizing the struggles and achievements of workers. Over time, its observance has evolved into a more relaxed holiday that marks the unofficial end of summer, characterized by picnics, barbecues, and recreational activities. Despite this shift, the holiday retains its core purpose of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of American workers.

Conclusion

Labor Day serves as a reminder of the progress made by the labor movement and the ongoing importance of fair labor practices. While its celebrations have transformed over the years, the holiday remains a powerful symbol of the hard work and dedication that drive the nation’s prosperity. It’s a day to reflect on the achievements of the past and continue advocating for workers' rights and fair conditions.

Closed July 4th & 5th for Independence Day

Happy July 4th! Let’s celebrate our nation’s freedom and the opportunities it provides for us all. Thank you for being a valued customer and happy July 4th! We will be closed Thursday July 4th and Friday July 5th. All orders placed online will be processed on Monday July 8th.

The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Closed Monday Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Memorial Day! May we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Enjoy the day with your loved ones, and don’t forget to think about those who served and sacrificed

History
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, began during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. After World War I, it came to be observed in honour of those who had died in all U.S. wars, and its name changed to Memorial Day. The holiday was established in 1868 by an organization of Union veterans as a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. The solemn holiday has been formally observed at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C
